Why Children Have Meltdowns and What to Do Instead of Punishment

Meltdowns can feel overwhelming for both children and parents. One minute, everything is fine, and the next, your child is crying, yelling, or completely shutting down

          .

          It’s easy to think:

          “They’re being defiant.”

          “They need consequences.”

But the truth is… meltdowns are not misbehavior. They are a signal.

           What Is a Meltdown?

A meltdown happens when a child becomes so overwhelmed that they lose the ability to cope.

          This can look like:

            Crying or screaming

            Dropping to the floor

            Refusing to move

            Hitting or throwing items

            Shutting down completely

At this point, your child is not choosing this behavior; they are struggling to regulate their body and emotions.

           Why Do Children Have Meltdowns?

Meltdowns don’t come “out of nowhere.” There is always a reason, even if it’s not obvious in the moment.

           1. Difficulty Communicating

Some children don’t yet have the skills to say:

            “I need help.”

            “This is too hard.”

            “I want a break.”

So instead, their behavior does the talking.

           2. Transitions and Changes

          Many children struggle when:

            Leaving a preferred activity

            Switching tasks

            Plans change unexpectedly

Even small transitions can feel like a big loss of control.

           3. Sensory Overload

Environments that feel typical to us can be overwhelming to a child:

            Loud noises

            Bright lights

            Busy spaces

          Their nervous system becomes overloaded.

           4. Difficulty Waiting or Delayed Gratification

Waiting is a skill, and for some children, it’s a very hard one.

           5. Fatigue, Hunger, or Illness

          Sometimes the cause is simple:

            Tired

            Hungry

            Not feeling well

These are often called “setting events,” and they make meltdowns more likely.

           Why Punishment Doesn’t Work:

When a child is in a meltdown, their brain is in survival mode.

          They are not able to:

            Process consequences

            Learn from the situation

            “Think through” their behavior

          Punishment in this moment often:

            Escalates the meltdown

            Damages trust

Doesn’t teach the child what to do instead

           What to Do Instead:

           1. Stay Calm (Even When It’s Hard)

Your calm helps regulate your child.

          Think of it as:

“I’m lending them my calm until they can find their own.”

           2. Reduce Language

During a meltdown, less is more.

          Instead of long explanations, try:

            “I’m here.”

            “You’re safe.”

            “Let’s take a break.”

           3. Give Space (When Safe)

Some children need space to regulate.

Stay nearby, but don’t overwhelm them with demands or questions.

           4. Support Regulation

          Help their body calm down:

Deep breaths (if they can tolerate it)

            Quiet space

            Comfort item

            Sitting together quietly

           5. Teach Skills After the Meltdown

This is the most important part.

Once your child is calm, you can teach:

            How to ask for help

            How to request a break

            How to wait

            How to handle “no”

This is where real learning happens.

           Rethinking Our Approach to Meltdowns:

          The goal is to:

           ✔ Understand why they’re happening

           ✔ Teach replacement skills

           ✔ Reduce them over time

A Different Way to Look at Behavior:

          Instead of asking:

“How do I stop this behavior?”

          Try asking:

“What is my child trying to communicate?”

           Key Takeaways:

Meltdowns are hard, but they are also opportunities.

          They tell us:

What skills a child is missing

            What support they need

Where we can help them grow

And with the right strategies, meltdowns can become less frequent, less intense, and easier to manage.

Understanding Functional Communication Training (FCT) and Why It Matters

Many children diagnosed with autism have a difficult time communicating effectively with those around them. They may not be able to communicate their wants and needs clearly and this could lead to frustration and challenging behaviors. When children lack the skills to communicate they find other ways to let others know what they need which sometimes comes in the form of challenging behaviors like crying and tantrums. Many times the challenging behaviors you are seeing are actually attempts to communicate!

How can we help children communicate effectively? In ABA one of the tools we use is Functional Communication Training (FCT). Functional Communication Training helps reduce challenging behaviors by teaching an alternative and more effective way to communicate wants and needs. By pinpointing the behavior's function and teaching a replacement skill, we not only reduce challenging behaviors but also promote meaningful growth in communication.

How do ABA practitioners implement FCT?

Here is a step by step guide on how we implement FCT:

Step 1: Identify the function of the challenging behavior.

This is the most important step! The function of the behavior is the reason the child is engaging in the behavior. Behavior analysts identify four main functions of behavior:

            Escape/Avoidance:

To get out of an unpleasant situation or task.

            Attention-Seeking:

To gain social interaction or acknowledgment.

            Access to Tangibles:

To obtain a preferred object or activity.

            Sensory Stimulation:

             For self-soothing or stimulation.

Step 2: Determine an appropriate replacement skill

The next step is to decide on the communication skill that we will teach as a replacement. It is important that the replacement behavior directly addresses the function of the original behavior. If it was found that the challenging behavior is escape maintained then we may teach the child to use a “break card” to appropriately request a break. Make sure to teach a skill that the child can easily accomplish. We want the replacement behavior to be easier to use than the original challenging behavior.

Step 3: Teach the communication skill

Now we are ready to teach the child the replacement behavior or the communication skill. When teaching a new skill it is important to do so when the child is calm and receptive. Set aside dedicated time to practice the new skill in a structured and controlled setting. During practice time we simulate situations where the child would use the new communication skill and we teach the child to use the new skill to communicate using the new skill.

           Step 4: Provide Reinforcement

Reinforcement is crucial to help children to adopt the new skill they learned as a replacement for the challenging behaviors they used previously to communicate. For the replacement skill to be successful it has to be just as effective or even more effective in meeting their needs. The reinforcement should be immediate and consistent access to what the child requests using their newly learned communication skill. For example, if the child requests a break using a break card they should be immediately granted access to a break.

Step 5: Collect and Analyze Data

In order for Behavior Analysts to know if the FCT process is successful they need to collect and analyze data. Data should be collected on the frequency of the child’s use of the replacement skill and graphed to visually monitor progress. If progress is not occurring the behavior analyst will make changes to the plan in order to ensure that the child is progressing.

Common mistakes and myths about Functional Communication Training:

            Myth!

Functional Communication Training requires the child to be verbal

FCT teaches a skill to communicate a need or want. This can be a verbal request or it can be a nonverbal communication such as a picture card, a gesture or other action.

            Mistake!

             Teaching an unrelated skill

If the replacement skill is unrelated to the function of the behavior it will not reduce the challenging behavior as it does not address the child’s need.

            Mistake!

Teaching a skill that is too general

It is important to be targeted in the skill that is taught as a replacement. Teaching general requests will be much less effective. For example, teaching a child to use the sign language sign for “more” when they want more of their food. It is more helpful to teach the child to be able to be specific in what they want to avoid frustration when caregivers do not know what the child wants more of. Teaching the child to use picture cards to point to the specific item that they want will be more effective to accurately communicate the child’s needs and wants.

Functional Communication Training is a powerful tool that focuses on communication as a replacement for challenging behaviors. FCT helps to reduce challenging behaviors while helping children to develop critical communication skills that help them to better communicate with the important people in their lives. Talk with your BCBA about how to incorporate functional communication to build your child’s communication skills and empower your child with the skills they need to communicate effectively!

The single most important thing you should know is that a trustworthy provider will be an open book about their financial practices. Your focus should be on your child's progress, not on decoding confusing invoices.

To help you find a partner who values clarity as much as you do, here are the five core questions you must ask any ABA provider before you begin services.

            1. What is my out-of-pocket cost for ABA Therapy? Explaining the ‘Explanation of Benefits’ (EOB)

This is the most fundamental question. A vague answer here is a major red flag. You need a clear, written breakdown of your financial responsibility.

The provider should be able to give you a detailed estimate based on your specific insurance plan. They should explain the key components of your cost including any deductible, co-pay or co-insurance and out-of-pocket maximums.

A good provider will proactively send you the EOB and help you understand what it means.

            2. What happens if my insurance provider changes once services start?

People change jobs and insurance plans. A prepared provider will have a clear, standardized process for this transition to minimize disruption to your child's therapy.

It is imperative that you notify your provider immediately of any insurance or plan changes. The provider should immediately re-verify your new benefits, including deductibles, co-pay, and authorization requirements.

Families should be aware that insurance co-pays, co-insurance, and deductibles are reset annually on January 1. As a result, increased out-of-pocket costs may apply.

            3. What happens if my insurance provider denies claims?

Claim denials are common, especially in ABA therapy. The provider should have a dedicated billing department or specialist who handles claim denials and their process for correcting errors, peer-to peer review and formal appeals.

            4. Am I responsible for missed or cancelled appointments?

The provider should have their cancellation policy in writing. It should specify the notification process, cancellation fees and exceptions.

            5. How are service authorizations tracked by the agency?

Insurance companies authorize ABA therapy in specific blocks of time (e.g., a certain number of hours per month for six months). If the provider fails to track this accurately, your child's services could suddenly stop. The provider should use a system to track each client's authorizations start date, end date, and total authorized hours.

By asking these five questions, you force the provider to demonstrate their competence, transparency, and commitment to clear communication. Their answers will tell you everything you need to know about whether they are a partner you can trust.

Transparency in billing isn't just a nice to have; it's the foundation of a trusting partnership between your family and your ABA provider. At Sidekicks, we believe in transparent billing you can trust.

Small Wins, Big Impact: Celebrating Everyday Successes 10/14

At Sidekicks, we’ve always believed that progress doesn’t have to come with fanfare to be worth celebrating. Sometimes, the most meaningful growth is found in the smallest of moments. A smile. Eye contact. Trying something new. Saying a word. Getting through the morning routine independently. These are the quiet victories that build confidence and change lives.

It’s easy to get caught up in milestones and timelines, but in our world, success isn’t about comparison. It’s about connection. It’s about seeing every individual for who they are, honoring their pace, strengths, goals, and being fully present for their journey.

We work with individuals of all abilities and ages, and what’s universal is this: small steps lead to big breakthroughs. When someone makes a new friend, communicates a need, or simply has a great day, that’s a win. And as a team, we’re here to notice it, appreciate it, and build on it.

Families often ask us what progress looks like. The truth is, it looks different for everyone. But when we slow down and recognize the little things, we remind ourselves just how powerful this work is.

At Sidekicks, we’re proud to be part of those moments. We celebrate the small wins because we know they’re not small at all.

Why We Do What We Do: A Personal Reflection

By: Niko Antonellos - Owner and Founder of Sidekicks

It’s been over a decade since Sidekicks began as a college project in 2012. At the time, I was a student with an idea, not fully aware that what I was building would become a lifelong mission. What was thought to be a short-term venture turned into something deeply personal, evolving through each family we’ve had the chance to support.

I started Sidekicks with the simple hope that if I could help even one family, it would be worth it. That belief still fuels me today, but now the mission has grown. I’m driven to help as many families as we possibly can, in a variety of meaningful ways.

At its core, Sidekicks has always been about one thing: enriching lives. We’ve never just wanted to offer a service. We’ve always wanted to create a place where individuals with disabilities can thrive, exceed their potential, and feel truly supported every step of the way.

It’s probably been years since I’ve shared this side of myself. But I see this as an opportunity to reconnect with the heart behind what we do, and to remind everyone, including myself, of the “why” behind Sidekicks.

One of the biggest takeaways I’ve had on this journey is that we are all capable of pushing ourselves more than we think. So often, we accept the excuses in our heads as truth without questioning them. Success is never guaranteed, but you have a much better chance of failing forward than waiting around for the “right” excuse to dissolve.

Growth comes from movement, not hesitation.

From the very beginning, Sidekicks has been a team effort rooted in purpose. We’ve always cared deeply about doing right by the people who depend on us. Our services aren’t just tasks to check off. They’re real interactions that carry real weight. Every member of our team brings that same commitment, and it’s what makes this work so powerful.

We do this because the fulfillment we get from making a positive difference in someone’s life is unlike anything else. It’s one of the few things in this world that nobody could possibly ever take away from you. It’s the small victories, a smile, a new skill learned, a family feeling supported that keep us inspired. Those moments are what remind me why this work matters.

Over the past 13 years, we’ve faced our share of challenges. We’ve had tough days, unexpected changes, and moments that tested us. We didn’t always have all the answers, but we stayed committed to figuring it out and we figured it out together.

Shoutout to our former staff who were part of those early days, you know how much of this journey was trial and error. What we never lacked was the drive to get it right for the individuals we serve. That’s what always pushed us forward.

As we continue to grow and evolve, my hope is that we never lose sight of this purpose. I want Sidekicks to be a place where our team feels empowered and prepared to take their skills to the next level. I want the people we support to know they have a community behind them. One that believes in their potential and works tirelessly to help them succeed.

This journey is bigger than any one of us. It’s about creating something lasting. Something that truly matters.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this. Our team, our families, our community. Your trust and dedication mean everything.

We’re also excited to share that we have some meaningful new plans in the works for the future of Sidekicks. Stay tuned.

           Let's keep moving forward!

Summer brings sunshine, longer days, and opportunities to make meaningful memories. But for individuals with sensory processing differences, typical summer activities can be overstimulating.

Crowds, loud noises, unfamiliar textures, and unpredictable schedules can make it hard to fully enjoy the season. With some planning and creativity, families and caregivers can create summer fun that feels safe, accessible, and exciting for everyone.

Here are a few sensory friendly activities to try this summer:

           Backyard water play

Create a fun and controlled environment with a sprinkler, splash pad, or water table at home. These activities allow for cooling playtime without the unpredictability or noise of a public pool. Let your loved one explore the water on their terms. Some may enjoy wearing water shoes or goggles for added comfort.

           Nature walks during quieter hours

Local parks or trails can be a wonderful way to engage the senses calmly. Go early in the morning or later in the evening when parks are less crowded and temperatures are more comfortable. Listen for birds, collect leaves or rocks, or just enjoy a peaceful stroll.

           DIY sensory bins

Fill bins with items like kinetic sand, dried beans, or water beads. Bring them outside for a mess-free, relaxing activity. You can even theme the bins with summer items like seashells, toy sea animals, or mini shovels.

           Create a chill zone

Set up a shaded tent, umbrella, or pop-up canopy where someone can retreat and take a break. Equip it with fidget toys, noise-canceling headphones, books, or a cooling towel to make it extra inviting.

           Sensory friendly community events

Check your local library, movie theater, or community center for sensory friendly programming. These events are often designed with lighting, volume, and pacing adjustments to better meet the needs of individuals with sensory sensitivities.

Summer can be enjoyable and accessible for all with a little flexibility and preparation. The goal is not to do it all, but to find what feels right for your loved one and your family. With the right support, summer fun can be a season of confidence, joy, and connection.

           1. Understand the Individual’s Needs

Every person experiences water differently. Whether they have physical limitations, sensory sensitivities, or communication challenges, it’s important to know how your loved one interacts with water environments.

Do they get overstimulated by splashing or loud noises?

Are they prone to elopement or wandering?

Do they understand verbal directions or need visual cues?

Taking these factors into account before any water-based activity allows you to prepare appropriately and avoid unsafe situations.

           2. Pick the Right Location

Not all water access points are created equal. Look for inclusive spaces that are designed with accessibility in mind.

            Accessible beaches and pools:

These often have ramps, lifts, and adaptive changing facilities.

            Inclusive swim programs:

Ask about classes or swim times for individuals with disabilities.

            Trained staff:

Verify whether lifeguards or instructors have experience working with individuals who require additional support.

Pro tip: Call ahead. Don’t be afraid to ask detailed questions about accessibility, crowd levels, and accommodations.

           3. Use Proper Equipment

The right tools can significantly reduce the risk of accidents:

            Adaptive life jackets:

Choose USCG-approved devices that support posture and breathing for individuals with mobility challenges.

            Sun protection gear:

Rash guards, hats, and shaded tents help avoid overheating.

            Communication aids:

Laminate a simple waterproof communication board or bring a speech device with protective casing if your loved one is nonverbal.

           4. Prioritize One-on-One Supervision

Even with lifeguards present, direct and dedicated supervision is critical.

Follow the “arm’s reach” rule. Always stay close enough to intervene instantly.

Use visual identifiers like bright clothing or swim caps.

Rotate supervision responsibilities among caregivers to stay alert.

Name the person who is "on-duty" for supervision when rotating so that everyone involved knows who is supervising at all times.

A lot of accidents involve miscommunication of who was supposed to be supervising.

If your loved one is supported by a Sidekicks staff member during summer outings, make sure their role includes clear safety expectations.

           5. Enroll in Adaptive Swim Lessons

The earlier individuals learn water orientation and safety, the better. Many YMCAs, Special Olympics, and local swim schools offer modified instruction for individuals with disabilities.

           Key focus areas should include:

            Floating and breath control

            Exiting the water safely

            Recognizing pool edges and signs

Practicing “stop and wait” skills at poolside

           6. Prepare an Emergency Plan

Before heading out, review an emergency plan with your team.

Assign who will call 911, who will assist the individual, and who will meet emergency personnel.

Know the exact address of your swimming location.

Keep medications and emergency contact info in a waterproof bag.

Technology can also help. Consider using GPS trackers or wearable alarms for individuals who may wander or need extra support.

           7. Celebrate the Joy of Safe Play

Summer water activities can and should be fun, not feared. With the right preparation, families can build beautiful memories while also fostering independence, confidence, and inclusion.

Whether it’s wading in the bay, swimming laps, or just dancing through the sprinkler, water fun is for everyone and it’s even better when it’s safe.

Building independence is one of the most empowering gifts you can give a child. It fosters self-confidence, decision-making skills, and a sense of responsibility.

Whether at home, school, or out in the world, promoting independence helps children prepare for life’s challenges while encouraging them to thrive in their own unique ways.

Here are five practical strategies to help build independence in children.

           1. Encourage Decision-Making

Allowing children to make choices helps them to develop critical thinking and decision-making skills. Start with small decisions, such as choosing between two outfits, snacks, or activities. As your child’s confidence grows you can incorporate opportunities to make complex choices and decisions, such as planning a family outing or organizing their study schedule.

Tip: Offer limited options to avoid overwhelming your child and praise their decisions to boost confidence.

           2. Create a Consistent Routine

Routines give children a sense of structure and predictability, helping them understand what to expect and how to manage their time. Assign tasks within the routine that they can manage independently, such as brushing their teeth, setting the table, or packing their school bag.

Tip: Use visual schedules or checklists for younger children to help them follow their daily routines independently.

           3. Teach Life Skills

Teaching life skills is essential to foster your child’s independence. Involve your child in age-appropriate tasks such as making a sandwich, tidying up their toys, or doing simple chores.

Over time, progress to more advanced responsibilities, such as cooking meals, managing money, or organizing their personal belongings.

Tip: Be patient as they learn. Mistakes are a natural part of the learning process and offer valuable lessons.

           4. Promote Problem-Solving

Help children develop problem-solving skills by encouraging them to think through challenges. Instead of immediately providing solutions, ask guiding questions like, “What do you think we could do about this?” or “What are some other ways to solve this problem?” This approach teaches them to think critically and trust their ability to handle situations.

Tip: Celebrate their problem-solving efforts, even if the solution isn’t perfect, to build resilience and confidence.

           5. Support Without Hovering

It’s natural to want to protect children, but stepping back allows them to take ownership of their tasks and responsibilities.

Offer support when they truly need it but encourage them to try difficult tasks on their own first. This balance helps to build self-reliance while knowing there is a safety net if needed.

Tip: Gradually increase the level of responsibility and independence you expect as they grow, ensuring your expectations align with their developmental stage.

           Final Thoughts

Building independence is a gradual process that requires patience, consistency, and trust. By incorporating these five strategies into your daily interactions, you can help your child develop the skills and confidence needed to navigate life with independence and self-assurance. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection, it’s progress!

Independence is a lifelong skill that will empower your child to succeed, adapt, and thrive in all areas of life. Start small, stay supportive, and watch them soar!

Five tips for parents on how to teach daily life skills to their children:

Break Tasks into Manageable Steps: Divide tasks like getting dressed, brushing teeth, or preparing a snack into smaller, manageable steps. This makes learning easier and less overwhelming for children, allowing them to focus on mastering one step at a time.

Use Visual Aids and Schedules: Visual aids such as pictures, charts, or schedules can help children understand the sequence of tasks and what is expected of them each day. Visual cues provide structure and support independence in completing routines.

Provide Opportunities for Practice: Encourage children to practice skills regularly. Repetition helps solidify learning and builds confidence. Allow them to do tasks independently when possible, while offering guidance and support as needed.

Offer Positive Reinforcement: Acknowledge and praise children for their efforts and achievements in learning life skills. Positive reinforcement, such as verbal praise, stickers, or small rewards, encourages continued effort and motivates children to independently perform tasks.

Incorporate Learning into Daily Routines: Integrate skill-building activities into daily routines and activities. For example, involve children in meal preparation to teach cooking skills or incorporate counting and sorting into grocery shopping. Making learning part of everyday life reinforces skills in meaningful contexts.

By implementing these tips, parents can effectively teach and reinforce daily life skills, fostering independence and confidence in their children’s abilities.

Ensuring health and wellness for individuals with disabilities is crucial for enhancing their overall quality of life and promoting long-term well-being. While it presents unique challenges, prioritizing physical and mental health can significantly improve both physical capabilities and emotional resilience. Here’s why it matters and how it can be achieved:

           Importance of Health and Wellness

Health and wellness play pivotal roles in every person’s life, and individuals with disabilities are no exception. Maintaining good health not only improves physical strength and stamina but also enhances mental clarity and emotional stability. For those with disabilities, focusing on wellness can alleviate secondary health conditions, manage chronic ailments, and potentially reduce the impact of their disability on daily life. Moreover, promoting wellness fosters independence, self-esteem, and a sense of empowerment, enabling individuals to participate more actively in their communities.

Strategies for Achieving Health and Wellness

Physical Activity and Exercise: Tailored physical activities can improve mobility, strength, and cardiovascular health. Whether through adapted sports, aquatic therapy, or personalized exercise routines, staying active contributes to overall fitness and reduces the risk of obesity and related health issues.

Nutrition and Diet: A balanced diet rich in nutrients supports optimal health. Nutritionists can help create meal plans that address specific dietary needs, ensuring individuals receive essential vitamins and minerals. Proper nutrition supports immune function, digestion, and overall energy levels.

Regular Health Screenings: Routine medical check-ups and screenings are essential for early detection of health concerns. Regular visits to healthcare providers allow for timely interventions and management of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory disorders.

Mental Health Support: Managing mental well-being is integral to holistic health. Therapeutic interventions, counseling, and mindfulness practices can help individuals cope with stress, anxiety, or depression often associated with disabilities. Building resilience and promoting positive mental health fosters emotional stability and overall life satisfaction.

Community Engagement and Support Networks: Social connections are vital for emotional health. Engaging in community activities, joining support groups, and fostering friendships provide opportunities for social interaction, emotional support, and a sense of belonging.

Accessible Environments: Ensuring environments are accessible and inclusive promotes independence and safety. Accessible facilities, transportation options, and adaptive equipment enable individuals to engage in activities without barriers, enhancing their ability to lead active and fulfilling lives.

           Conclusion

Prioritizing health and wellness for individuals with disabilities is not only beneficial but essential for their overall well-being. By implementing strategies tailored to their unique needs, individuals can achieve greater independence, resilience, and quality of life. Emphasizing physical activity, nutrition, regular health screenings, mental health support, community involvement, and accessible environments contributes to a holistic approach to wellness. Together, these efforts empower individuals with disabilities to thrive and live life to the fullest.

Credentials and Experience: Look for providers with qualified staff, such as Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) for ABA therapy or licensed speech-language pathologists. Check their experience working with individuals with similar needs and disabilities.

Quality of Services: Research reviews and testimonials from other families. Look for providers known for delivering high-quality, effective services. Ask for references or speak directly with current clients to gauge satisfaction.

Individualized Treatment Plans: Ensure the provider offers personalized treatment plans tailored to your child’s specific needs and goals. A good provider will conduct thorough assessments and collaborate with you to develop a plan that addresses your child’s unique challenges and strengths.

Communication and Collaboration: Choose a provider who emphasizes clear communication and collaboration with families. They should keep you informed about progress, setbacks, and adjustments to treatment plans. Regular meetings and updates should be part of their approach.

Accessibility and Support: Consider the provider’s accessibility and support options. Are they responsive to your inquiries and available for emergencies or urgent questions? Do they provide resources or support for navigating insurance, funding, or other administrative needs?

I was certified as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst in 2014, but my road to achieving my certification as a BCBA began when I was an undergraduate student at the College of New Jersey pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. When I started college in 2005, as a TCNJ student, I was not yet interested in the field of Special Education. My passion for working with students with special needs, more specifically those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, was sparked in 2008, when I began substitute teaching at a special education school district, where I worked with preschool and elementary aged children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This is where I first learned about the field of Applied Behavior Analysis and I learned how ABA techniques are used to support and teach individuals with ASD and IDD diagnoses.

My experience as a substitute teacher in autism classrooms led me to pursue a career where I could provide support and empower individuals with special needs and autism. I began to seek positions as an ABA therapist where I could learn more about ABA therapy. I worked under BCBAs who inspired me to pursue a Master of Arts degree in Applied Psychology and to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst so that I could improve the lives of individuals with special needs and autism and help them to reach their full potential through the implementation of applied behavior analysis.

In 2011, I started classes at Rider University in the Applied Psychology Masters program and began to work towards my goal of becoming a BCBA. While I was completing my courses at Rider I continued to work as an ABA therapist to collect my field work hours while engaging in meaningful work in a supportive work environment. In 2014, after completing my fieldwork hours and passing the board exam, I completed my Master of Arts degree in Applied Psychology and ABA and earned my certificate as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

My road to becoming a BCBA was a little different than many of my colleagues. I began my education on the path towards elementary education, driven to help children learn and grow. In 2008 my path changed when I stepped into an autism classroom which led me to pursue a career in Applied Behavior Analysis and BCBA certification in 2014. Over my career I have continued to learn and grow as an ABA provider, and BCBA, and sought out opportunities that were fulfilling and fostered career growth opportunities in supportive environments. If you have the drive to help and empower others and you seek opportunities in a fulfilling field, then maybe you should consider a career in Applied Behavior Analysis too.

It was the end of 2021, and I was looking for a new job. I had worked in adult behavioral health for years but wanted a little bit of change. That’s when I saw an ad posted on Indeed.com indeed.com for Sidekicks Support Services. I read through the postings for an ABA Therapist and for a Behavior Technician. I checked out the Sidekicks website.

“Every Superhero Needs A Sidekick”. That slogan stuck.

I continued reading and quickly felt like this could be a place whose values truly aligned with mine. I wrote a cover letter and submitted my resume. The rest, as they say, is history!

I started working part-time with Sidekicks as a Behavior Technician in the Individual Support Services (ISS) program. This means I worked with children ages 3-21 who were diagnosed with intellectual or developmental disabilities. I worked in their homes and in the community and taught life skills. First, I had virtual training, and then hands-on training during the first few sessions with each child I worked with. I even got to shadow a Sidekick while they worked with a Superhero! Fantastic families, friendly and welcoming staff, paid training… I was thrilled with my new position and proud to work for a company that was so passionate about what they do.

With hard work and dedication, I was promoted to ISS Supervisor within my first year. Becoming a supervisor came with more training and responsibility. As a supervisor, I am responsible for assessing client needs, writing treatment plans, communicating with the kids’ Care Managers, training new staff, supporting staff and families, and overseeing services. It was hard work, but very rewarding.

After getting experience through ISS, I was interested in expanding my knowledge in the field and working more hours. Sidekicks was more than happy to support my growth; I was given additional training to start working some hours as an ABA therapist. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. As an ABA therapist, I work with children ages 2 and over who have an autism diagnosis. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) supervises and guides me. The BCBA writes a plan, then teaches and trains me on how to implement the plan by running various programs and collecting data.

At this point, after just over a year with the company, I had learned and grown so much. I loved the job, the company, my peers… so it was a no-brainer to apply when a position as an Administrative Manager opened up. I was offered the position and happily accepted. That brings me to where I am today! Working full time for a company I love and believe in. I still do both ISS Supervision and ABA Therapy and also support the company through admin and HR work. I have grown so much as a person and an employee – and have everyone at Sidekicks Support Services to thank for that. My coworkers always support me, check-in, answer questions, and don’t hesitate to help me anytime I need it.

Sidekicks is an amazing place to work. If you’re interested in working with kids with disabilities, or adults (yes – we even provide support to disabled adults through our Direct Support Professionals!), please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We will do our best to find a position for you, whether you have a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, no degree, or varying levels of experience. Our purpose is growing, and we are always looking for more Sidekicks to join the family and help those Superheroes.

Despite progress in social awareness and accessibility, much remains to be done. A more inclusive society acknowledges individuals with disabilities and provides acceptance for all.

Disability awareness is understanding the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in their daily lives. This includes recognizing the barriers they face in education, employment, and social situations. To increase understanding and recognition for individuals with disabilities, we can take three key actions: educate, create, and challenge. By educating others about the unique experiences and potential of individuals with disabilities, creating welcoming environments, and challenging negative stereotypes and misconceptions, we can foster a more inclusive society.

Disability inclusion involves removing barriers and creating a welcoming environment that supports individuals with disabilities. This includes encouraging the hiring and inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the workforce, promoting disability rights that ensure accessibility, and using inclusive language. Let’s create a society that prioritizes, values and accepts the unique contributions and perspectives of individuals with disabilities.

Disability acceptance is an essential aspect of creating a more inclusive society. Our aim should be to promote a culture of respect where everyone is valued and heard.

To promote disability acceptance, we can celebrate the achievements and contributions of individuals with disabilities in society. We can empower individuals with disabilities to be self-advocates and participate in decision-making processes that affect them. Encouraging positive and accurate portrayals of individuals with disabilities in media and popular culture is also important. This can help challenge negative attitudes and stereotypes towards disabilities.

It is important to listen to the experiences and perspectives of individuals with disabilities to better understand their unique challenges. Individuals with disabilities should not be defined by their disabilities, and they should not be excluded from opportunities and experiences that others take for granted.

Promoting awareness, inclusion, and acceptance for individuals with disabilities requires the active participation and engagement of the community and organizations. Together, we can create a society where everyone can participate and thrive. Everyone deserves the chance to be seen, heard, and valued. Let’s work together to make that a reality for individuals with disabilities.

The Role of the ABA Therapist

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based science which informs a practical and comprehensive approach to behavior modification. Practitioners of this science, called Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) rely on years of empirical research to assess, design, and implement ABA programming for the beneficiaries or clients that they service. ABA therapists, who may pursue credentialing as Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) are those who operate under the supervision of a BCBA, and are responsible for carrying out or implementing the specific programming that the BCBA has designed.

Considering factors such as age, skill level, and disability, among many others, BCBAs take care to specifically design a treatment program for each of their client’s unique situations and needs. It is then imperative for the BCBA to ensure proper training of the technician who will be responsible for the implementation of treatment. ABA therapists have several responsibilities when conducting their sessions. They must make sure that they are adhering to the programming as designed by their BCBA supervisor and are implementing appropriate ABA practices. Sessions include working on specific skill deficits of the learner, while also implementing behavior intervention procedures, such as reinforcement. Reinforcement can be used to target any socially significant maladaptive behaviors that the learner may be exhibiting which hinder them from acquiring these skills.

ABA therapists should also expect to be trained in various forms of data to be collected during sessions. Data is an essential piece of the ABA model as it allows the BCBA to determine the learner’s progress with skill acquisition and behavior reduction. The BCBA often reviews the data in order to make informed decisions about whether any modifications to programming are appropriate. The therapist should be prepared for any such modifications as they will impact how sessions are conducted. ABA therapists need to be outgoing and approachable so as to develop a strong rapport with their learners. Pairing is the process of a clinician associating themselves with reinforcement so that when they arrive for instruction the learner is excited to see them and is looking forward to their session. By establishing this positive relationship with their learner, the technician is more likely to make meaningful progress during ABA sessions.

Therapists should also expect regular visits from their BCBA supervisor during sessions where the BCBA will observe the technician’s implementation of programming in order to ensure treatment integrity. The relationship between the therapist and the BCBA is also an important one, as the two work closely together, and the BCBA must be able to provide effective supervision to the technician. The technician should also be able to communicate with the BCBA, updating them on sessions and seeking clarification on any piece of the programming that may be unclear.

Today, we will discuss the functions of behavior. In a previous blog, we briefly reviewed the four functions of behavior. To quickly summarize, behavioral function refers to the purpose that a behavior serves, or the reason why an individual engages in that behavior. All behavioral functions fall into at least one of four different categories.

The four functions are: attention-seeking, access to tangibles or activities, escape or avoidance of tasks or demands, and automatic reinforcement. Now let’s apply these functions to real-world scenarios.

Example 1, (Attention-Seeking): You’re scrolling through Facebook when you come across a funny meme. You engage in the behavior of sharing that meme, which is then followed by people reacting to and commenting on your post. The reactions and comments from your friends are providing your behavior of sharing the meme with reinforcement in the form of social attention.

Example 2, (Access to Tangibles): You get home after a long day of work and you decide to relax on the couch and watch TV. You engage in the behavior of picking up the remote control and pressing the power button, which is followed by the television turning on. Your behavior of picking up the remote and pressing the power button is being reinforced by gaining access to the activity of watching TV.

Example 3, (Escape): You work for a Scranton-area paper supply company and are attending an awkward dinner party with your boss and colleagues. You pretend to get a text message from your landlord saying that your apartment flooded and you have to leave. Your behavior of making up an excuse is being reinforced by escaping the aversive situation of the uncomfortable work party.

Example 4, (Automatic Reinforcement): You’re walking through an elaborate garden with beautiful flowers. You come across some roses and you decide to smell their pleasant scent. Your behavior of smelling the roses and experiencing the aroma is in itself reinforcing.

lives. For this “ABA All Around Us” series, we’re going to break down some basic concepts and

apply them to real-world situations. Today, let’s take a look at Motivating Operations, or MO’s.

MO’s are environmental factors that impact how effective a reinforcer is. MO’s can either be Establishing Operations (EO’s) or Abolishing Operations (AO’s). An EO is an MO that increases how reinforcing something is, and an AO is an MO that decreases how reinforcing something is. MO’s precede SD’s in the behavior contingency. Remember, as we discussed last time, an SD is an environmental stimulus that signals to an individual that reinforcement is available contingent upon the occurrence of a specific behavioral response.

Let’s apply the concept of MOs to a real-world scenario. You’re going for a walk in the park on a hot summer day. You begin to get thirsty and see a water fountain on the side of your walking path up ahead. You stop at the fountain for a drink and then you continue walking. In the previous blog, we talked about Three-Term Contingencies; however, the above scenario is an example of a Four-Term Contingency.

Four-Term Contingencies include the MO as the first step in the contingency. In the above example, the setting event of you going for a walk on a hot summer day is the EO that increases how reinforcing water is (Step 1). The sight of the fountain up ahead is the SD which signals that water is available, as long as you engage in the behavior of stopping to take a drink (Step 2). Taking a drink at the fountain is the behavior (Step 3), and finally, gaining access to water and having your thirst quenched is the reinforcer (Step 4). Let’s try another example. One of your favorite drinks is hot chocolate; however, on a hot summer day you probably won’t be reinforced by gaining access to hot chocolate. This is because there is an abolishing operation (AO) in effect which decreases the reinforcing effectiveness of hot chocolate at that moment.
